Circus Smirkus

Once again, here's a review of the 2011 Circus Smirkus Big Top Tour. Be sure to check out the tour schedule for next year for a chance to see the show and Nauset Height's own Nick Zelle in action!

"For one who's never been much of a circus fan (scary and slapstick don't mix so well), I was utterly charmed and riveted by Circus Smirkis, from the moment it burst forth right on the dot of 2 pm in Sandwich to the joyous closing chorus of dancing, clowning young artists. There was nothing perfunctory or tedious about the fresh, talented performers, who obviously loved what they were presenting and had honed their skills to delight their audience. The physical feats of humor and of aerial daring, especially those performed high on ropes by our friend Nick Zelle, were astonishing. Added to all was the gracefulness, color, and intimacy of the show. It was beautiful, and a joy to attend."

Whale on Nauset Beach

Beachgoers on August 23 were shocked to see a pilot whale wash up on Nauset Beach. A autopsy was performed soon after to reveal the cause of death. We'll have a first hand account up soon. In the meantime, enjoy the pictures!

Summer Heat

After hearing so much about this summer's searing heat, we decided to get a few reports of our readers' sweltering experiences. From mild California to scorching D.C., here are the stories.

San Francisco: I am a bit cautious about responding to this trail because of the remarkably lovely summer we’ve been having in San Francisco, suffering from none of the horrible heat we hear about in the rest of the country. The days, generally, have been sunny and warmer than usual at 80ish degrees, and the nights cool down so we’re still under our year-round down comforter to sleep. (One night last week I turned on the fireplace!)

D.C.: When I landed at National Airport yesterday at 3:00 PM it was 97 degrees. Off came my tie and jacket as soon as I left air-conditioned space en route to the parking garage. I opened the car door, got in, started the engine and turned on the AC in a nanosecond.

On the drive home I passed a tennis club, taking a quick look to see if anyone was foolish enough to play. Sure enough, one court was occupied by two women. As I looked closer, I noticed that they were standing in the middle of the court on opposite sides of the net. Just standing, no movement.

Santa Monica: Checking in from a temperate Santa Monica, California. The Greenhornes have enjoyed balmy weather all summer. Two miles from the Pacific Ocean keeps an
on-shore flow of cool breezes. Often the temperature is 20+ degrees hotter just
2 miles inland. Our house is not air conditioned because it's unnecessary.

World War I and Orleans

Visit this link sent from a reader about the German shelling of Nauset Beach during World War I. Nauset Beach was, in fact, the only part of the U.S. to be attacked during the war. The sign at the top of the gaze references this event, but check out the link to learn more!
